THE LANCASTER CORRIDOR

Redevelopment of the Lancaster Corridor has been one of the main goals of Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings’ “Grow South” initiative that is strongly supported by City Councilman Dwaine Caraway who represents the area. Capitalizing on the existing DART rail line and history of the area, Lancaster Road has served as the “Main Street” and major commercial corridor for many communities and neighborhoods within southeast Oak Cliff. But the area has received little new development in recent years and the need for revitalization has become critical.

Some of City’s goals for the Lancaster corridor include

  • · Encourage reinvestment between Kiest station and the VA Medical Center to take advantage of housing, restaurant, shopping and entertainment opportunities.
  • · Increase DART ridership in the area for residents and employees of the VA Medical Center by increasing safety and aesthetics
  • · Increase access to amenities in the area through improved access to transit and bike and pedestrian trails

The intent of the redevelopment of the Lancaster Corridor is to generate reinvestment “sparks” across multiple market segments to incentivize new development activity.

City Wide CDC has designed a multi-year development plan to establish a core improvement area that can encourage larger market redevelopment. Implementation of the plan will strengthen the tax base, bring peace of mind to the community, and increase its identity as well as generate a new urban district with a memorable sense of place.

Three catalyst projects at strategic sites will link the corridor between Kiest Boulevard and Ledbetter Drive and will spark development throughout the entire corridor. City Wide CDC’s
