Rudy’s Chicken Relocation Marks the Start
of Lancaster Kiest Village in Oak Cliff
DALLAS, TX – June 12, 2013 - Groundbreaking ceremonies for a new 1,600 square foot building for the popular Rudy’s Chicken restaurant marks the redevelopment of one of the Lancaster corridor’s major intersections – Kiest Boulevard. City Wide Development Corporation plans a new 8,000 square foot commercial structure facing Lancaster Road, next to an existing retail building, with supportive apartment housing occupying the remainder of the northwest corner of the intersection.
Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, City Council member Dwaine Caraway and other members of the Dallas City Council participated with Rudy’s owners – Linda and Rudy Edwards – and City Wide’s president Sherman Roberts in the earth-turning ceremony at noon Wednesday.
“Because the Lancaster corridor is such an important thoroughfare for the entire southern sector, it is exciting to see all the changes already underway," explained Mayor Mike Rawlings. "Rudy's Chicken has been an anchor business here for many years so I'm pleased we were able to work out their move just a block north as it allows this major intersection to change. City Wide CDC's three projects along Lancaster Road are already making a difference in people's perception of the area."
Rudy’s Chicken has long been a business anchor on Lancaster Road. Established in 1992 by Rudy and Linda Edwards, the take-out only restaurant draws customers, often more than 1,000 a day, from a wide area. Known for the unique seasoning created by Mrs. Edwards, fried chicken with limited sides dishes attract customers who wait patiently in their cars or at the walk up window to be served.
“We’ve always tried to keep our prices low as most people in this neighborhood don’t earn a lot of money,” Mr. Edwards explained, “and we don’t take credit cards for the same reason. Most of our customers are good, hard-working, God-fearing people and we try to do what we can to help. Oak Cliff has been good to us and we try to be good to Oak Cliff by supporting church and school activities. There is lots of opportunity in Oak Cliff and we appreciate the Mayor’s efforts to try to bring more businesses and jobs here.”
